Heartfelt Stitches

Heartfelt Stitches was created by Mrs. Mary Ann (Mima) Gaskins as a way to raise funds for the at-risk disadvantaged students in Southeast Washington, DC. Students are able to continue in the academic component of the Academy free of charge on scholarships. During these troubled times, grass root organizations such as the Freedom Youth Academy; have truly been affected monetarily by what is going on in the world today.

Through her love of crochet, Mrs. Gaskins has found a new way to teach the children some of the skills that they need to succeed in this world today. Crochet teaches the students to be patient, to stay focused, to be organized and prepared, and to be more confident in their work. As stated by the Crochet Guild of America, Children are our future crocheters and worthy of our time.

This new learning tool that Mrs. Gaskins created is one of the seven characteristics and learning styles identified in human intelligence by Dr. Howard Gardner in his book, Frames of Mind. The multiple intelligence theory provides educators with a way of thinking about individual gifts and how to accommodate teaching to them. It also is a way of teaching conventional subject matter in ways more accommodating to the different ways of knowing. A basic knowledge and understanding of these learning styles and characteristics can be highly beneficial in improving the academic performance of most children.

The seven characteristics and learning styles are identified in human intelligence as follows: Linguistic, Musical, Logical-Mathematical, Spatial, Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal.

Understanding the relationship between the learning styles and human intelligences can become another step toward improving the academic achievement of the children.

Mrs. Gaskins has accomplished this through Heartfelt Stitches.
Heartfelt Stitches is being used as a fundraiser to support the educational goals of the at-risk disadvantaged children who attend the year round program at the Freedom Youth Academy.
