Dr. Henry J. Gaskins

 | Dr. Henry J. Gaskins is founder and president of the Freedom Youth Academy, Inc., which was initiated to assist the community youth with the improvement of their scholastic aptitude and educational skills.
Since 1980, the Freedom Youth Academy has received national honors and recognition from Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, as well as many local elected officials. The Academy has also received international recognition from foreign dignitaries representing over 25 countries. The Academy has been ranked among the top schools in the nation by the Department of Education.
Dr. Gaskins is a cum laude graduate of the International University and holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in education and an honoris causa Doctor of Science degree from Nova College for outstanding accomplishments in rendering distinguished service to the community.
With an extensive background in education as an undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate student, Dr. Gaskins has earned academic distinction at North Carolina A&T University, Howard University, Bell Business College, Temple Business School, Northwestern College, Catholic and St. John's Universities.
An outstanding athlete and former professional baseball player, Dr. Gaskins has been a teacher, professor, academic administrator, and director at a number of institutions of higher education. He has been cited for overall excellence on numerous occasions in these positions.
Dr. Gaskins is a retired supervisory librarian and was the initiator of the Youth Leadership Outreach Program at the Library of Congress. He has been an educational consultant at the Alfred Street Baptist Church and the Polk Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia, the Federal National Mortgage Corporation (Fannie Mae), the University of Virginia's Saturday Academy, Gettysburg College, and Eastern, H. D. Woodson, Carroll, Episcopal, Springbrook, and Wootten high schools.
Dr. Gaskins has been a member of President Bush's Youth Leadership forum and an associate member of the International Academic and Professional Society. Recipient of President Bush's Volunteer Action Award, Sister Clara Mohammed Education Award, Delta Sigma Theta Educational Development Award, Lambda Kappa Mu Community Service Award, Kimberly Clark's, "Kleenex Says Bless You" Award, Dossier Magazine's Philanthropy Award, Newsweek Magazine,'s "Good Neighbor" and "Unsung Hero" Awards, National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice Award, The Questers, Inc. Distinguished Service Award, the Washington Space Business Roundtable Education Award, and the United Planning Organization's Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award.
Dr. Gaskins was recognized by the McDonald's Corporation salute to outstanding African Americans, "Portraits of the City," in the Washington Post; and was the featured cover story, "Preparing for the New SAT's" in the Washington Times.
Professor John W. Santrock at the University of Texas at Dallas, stated in his book, Life-Span Development, "Dr. Gaskins can be especially helpful in developing a stronger sense of the importance of education by helping students set personal goals and commit to a desire to succeed."
All five of Dr. Gaskins children have excelled academically in college and professionally in their lives.
