Mrs. Mary Ann Gaskins is the co-founder and the Executive Director of the Freedom Youth Academy, which was founded in 1980 to assist the inner city disadvantaged youthwith their scholastic achievement and educational skills by offering them alternative modes of learning.

She was an administrative officer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for more than 35 years. She retired on March 31, 1995 from NASA. Mrs. Gaskins has a B.A. in education and has received over 70 national and international honors. On May 20, 1987, she and her husband were honored guests at a White House Ceremony where President Reagan praised them for their dedication and success of their enrichment program. They were also profiled in a Department of Education Report by Secretary of Education, William J. Bennett, Schools That Work: Educating Disadvantaged Children. On April 27, 1990, Mrs. Gaskins and her husband were recipients of President Bushs Volunteer Action Award, the most prestigious award given to any citizen for volunteerism.

Mrs Gaskins was the recipient of the United Planning Organization's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award which she received on January 15,1996. She was also the recipient of the WKYS-FM/WDCA-TV's 1994 "Women Who Make A Difference Award. Mrs. Gaskins was inducted into the D.C. Commission for Women Hall of fame in March of 1993.

She has been featured along with her husband, and children in the Washington Post, USA Today, Washington Times, Prince Georges Journal, The Congressional Record, Newsweek, Jet, Essence, SuccessGuide, Dossier, The Catholic Standard, and Child Magazine. She has been featured on television stations, Our Voices, BET Teen Summit, Making a Difference (Channel 20), Channels 4, 5, 7, 8, 9,16, 26, and 32. Mrs. Gaskins has also been featured in the following books: American Character, Finish For the Future, and 50 Ways to Serve Your Community.
